Benjamin Caryl House Museum

The Benjamin Caryl House of 1777 is one of the oldest buildings in Dover. Given to the Town, it is managed by the Dover Historical Society as a house museum. Adams & Smith and Finch&Rose were engaged by the town of Dover to perform a building assessment and develop a preservation plan with treatment recommendations for repair and stabilization of the building envelope. Once this was completed, Town Meeting approved a phase 1 restoration project to address many of the recommendations for the building envelope and structure.

The renovation project included repairs and replacement of clapboard siding, replacement of a rotted girt timber, repairs to window frames, stripping and repair of interior plaster, repairs to chimney masonry, and exterior painting. All work was completed in accordance with best preservation practices and the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards. Bidding and construction were carried out under MA Chapter 149 public construction regulations, and the project was completed within its budget.
